The first step is for the artist to do multiple "thumbnail" drawings for design and placement of shapes.

     
  Then the artist does a charcoal rendition to the size of the painting.
     
    He makes additional studies of elements, a model if necessary, then the charcoal "cartoon," color studies to workout time of day and color, and then transfers the drawing to canvas ...
