Addendum 2:
Proposal for the 2007 General Chapter of the Order

Creation of a Development Board for the Order

We propose the creation of a Development Board for the Carmelite Order with responsibility for identifying and securing outside funding for projects within the areas of (1) Carmelite missions, (2) Carmelite archives, (3) Carmelite libraries, (4) Carmelite formation, (5) research and study projects within res Carmelitana, (6) other projects as approved by the General Council.

The Board:

This Board would be directly responsible to the Prior General and the General Council. Its members would be Carmelites as well as non Carmelite individuals.

Staff of the Board:

The Board would have a full-time employee who is professionally prepared in development work. He or she would be familiar with the international sources of grants, including foundations, governmental organizations (for example, the European Union), private individuals, etc.

Rational for a Development Board:

Some progress has been made towards securing outside funding for the missions, through the efforts of the individual Provinces and the Society of the Little Flower of Ireland and Britain initiative. However, additional funding is necessary if a variety of projects are to be realized in other areas of the Order’s life.

We believe that some funding would be accessible if we approach as an international organization rather than just as individual entities within one country. We have been told this is particularly true in the case of the European Union.
