História da Orden do Carmo em Portugal
by Balbino V. Bayón, O. Carm. (Translated by Manuel Freitas, O. Carm.)
The Order of Carmel in Portugal and the "Editora Paulinas" have just
made available in a fine edition a truly monumental history of the
Carmelite presence in Portugal from their begining until present times.
This is a work of the famous Spanish historian Fr. Balbino Velasco Bayón,
O. Carm., who holds a doctorate in History from the University of Madrid.
He is the author of such fundamental studies as Historia del Carmelo
Español. This filled a gap that had existed for a long time and is now
an obligatory reference in Spanish historical bibliography.
This is underlinded in the prologue by Prof. Dr. Joaquim Veríssimo
Serrão, the President of the Portughese Academy of History, an institution
which is proud to count Fr. Balbino among its members, as does the Royal
Academy of History in Spain.
Organized according to a very clear outline, in fifteen chapters,
prefectly placed chronologically and thematically, the book gives a broad
view of the presence of the Carmelite Order in Portugal. It begins with a
reflection that identifies the protagonists and their historical context,
without forgetting fundamental aspects of the evolution of liturgy and
culture that allows us to understand the formidable work that the
Carmelites carried out in Portugal and the territories conquered by
Portugal, as well as the decisive moments in the history of the Church,
especially in the context of the Counter Reformation.
