María Ascensión del Santísimo Redentor Hernández, O. Carm. (DUM)

On November 2, 2005, All Souls Day, Sr. M. Ascención del Santísimo Redentor Hernández, O. Carm., died at the age of 96, one day before her birthday.

She was born on November 3, 1909 in Navacepeda de Tormes (Avila), Spain and made her profession of Simple Vows in the Carmelite monastery of Our Lady of Maravillas in Madrid on March 25, 1944. She was one of six sisters who founded the monastery in Dumaguete City, Philippines in 1958, the first monastery of the Carmelites in Asia.


María Inmaculada López Taveras, O. Carm. (SLC)

Sr. Maria Inmaculada López Taveras, O. Carm., of the Carmelite monastery of Santiago de los Caballeros, died on January 23, 2006, at the age of 77.

She was born in Licey al Medio (Santiago), Dominican Republic, on December 29, 1930. She made her Simple Profession on August 15, 1960.


María Dolors Miró i Romagosa, O. Carm. (VIL)

On January 30, 2006 Sr. María Dolors Miró i Romagosa, O. Carm., of the Carmelite monastery Vilafranca, Spain, died.

She was born on June 18, 1918 in Barcelona. She made her Simple Profession on October 12, 1941.


Maria Modesta de la Stma. Trinidad Mendoza Gutamay, O. Carm. (TAN)

On January 31, 2006, Sr. María Modesta de la Stma. Trinidad Mendoza Gutamay of the Carmelite monastery in Tanay, Philippines, died.

She was born on March 13, 1950 in Sta. María (Bulacán), Philippines. She made her Simple Profession on March 24, 1979.


Joseph Farrugia, O. Carm. (Mel)

Fr. Joseph Farrugia, a member of the Maltese Province, died on April 14, 2006, one week shy of his 66th birthday. He was the 1st Councilor of the Maltese Provincial Commissariate in Bolivia and residing in the community in Tarija, Bolivia at the time of his death.

Fr. Joseph was born in Valletta, Malta, on March 21, 1940. He professed his simple vows on September 27, 1959 and was ordained priest on April 3, 1965.

He left for the missions two years after his ordination. In 1993, he was chosen as the Provincial Delegate of the Maltese mission in Bolivia and was instrumental in the vocational ministry there.


Jesús Tabares Gil, O. Carm. (Baet)

Bro. Jesús Tabares Gil, O. Carm., a member of the Baetica Province, died at the hospital in Osuna, Spain on May 20, 2006. He was 77 years old.

He was born on June 25, 1928 in Puente Gentil (Córdoba) and entered the Carmelite Order with his Simple Profession on  June 13, 1967.


Johanna Mengelers, O. Carm. (BOX)

Sr. Johanna Mengelers, O. Carm., of the Carmelite community in the KVH St. Anna home in Boxmeer, The Netherlands, died on May 29, 2006, at the age of 89, two days before her 90th birthday.

Sister was born in Brunssum, The Netherlands, on May 31, 1916. She entered the novitiate of the monastery of Flos Carmeli in Heerlen, where she made her first profession on November 24, 1941. She later was a member of the Carmelite community in Elzendaal (Boxmeer).


Mª Jesús Gil Zabalza, O. Carm. (HUE)

On June 15, 2006 Sr. Mª Jesús Gil Zabalza of the Carmelite monastery of Nuestra Senora de la Asunción in Huesca, Spain, died.

She was born on August 31, 1928 in Catholic Navaro in Pamplona, Spain. She was called to follow Christ as a Servant of Mary and later entered the Carmelite monastery. She made her profession as a Carmelite on July 29, 1963.


Mario Enriquez, O. Carm. (MEL)

Fr. Mario Enriquez, a member of the Maltese Province, died at the age of 68 years on June 22, 2006.

Fr. Mario was born on November 13, 1937 and was given the name Vincent. He made his first profession on October 9, 1955 and was ordained priest on March 18, 1961.

In his ministry, Fr. Mario was an organist and director of the parish choir. He composed sacred music and taught music to others.


Daniël Steggink, O. Carm. (Neer)

Father Daniël Steggink, member of the Carmelite community in Zenderen, The Netherlands, died on July 6th, 2006 at the age of 84.

Father Daniël was born on June 15, 1922 in Oud-Ootmarsum and entered the Carmelite novitiate in Boxmeer on September 3, 1942. He professed his Simple Vows on September 14, 1943. On July 10, 1949 he was ordained priest in Merkelbeek.


Fergus Lickteig, O. Carm. (PCM)

Fr. Fergus Lichteig, O. Carm., member of the PCM Province, died on July 8, 2006, following an extended illness. He was 77 years old.

Fr. Fergus was born on November 27, 1928 in Greeley, Kansas. He made his first profession on August 22, 1948 and was ordained priest on May 28, 1955.

Fr. Fergus worked in education, including serving as the second principal of Carmel High School in Mundelein, Illinois. For a time he served the province as animator and was renowned for his "traveling slide show" on the history of Carmel which he presented through the Province.
