M. Gabriella (Elena) Fiorentini, O. Carm.

Sr. M. Gabriella (Elena) Fiorentini, of the Carmelite monastery in Vetralla, Italy died on April 22, 2004 after a long illness.

She was born in Vetralla on August 28, 1914 and made her profession of vows on December 10, 1945. She was the last nun who lived in the "Monastero della Rocca", the monastery in Vetralla destroyed during the bombings of World War II.


Ulrich Steinmüller, O. Carm.

Br. Ulrich Steinmüller, of the Upper German Province, died on April 26, 2004 in Bamberg where he was the sacristan. He was 42 years old. Br. Ulrich made his profession on October 25, 1987.


Ignatius Moore, O.Carm.

Bro. Ignatius Moore, O.Carm., died on the evening of Tuesday, May 4, 2004, in his 78th year. A native of Co Kildare, he made his Simple Profession on May 17, 1953.

A quiet man he spent his life working with his hands and was a skilled gardener. He spent a few short years in Zimbabwe where he gave his time to the building of mis sion buildings and churches which stand to this day as a testament to his skill and devotion. He went to his eternal reward following some months of ill health. May he rest in peace.


M. Patrocinio de San Jose, O. Carm.

Sr. M. Patrocinio de San Jose, born in Torrelaguna (Madrid) on March 7, 1921, died on May 5, 2004 after four long years of suffering with lung cancer. She made her simple profession on March 25, 1946 and solemn profession on May 26, 1949.  She was only solemnely professed for a short time when she became the assistant to the Director of Novices, a position she was later elected to. She was tireless and willing to work, a beloved member of the community. She died at 1 PM, having said her farewells, after 24 hours of profound agony.


Gerald Hipwell, O. Carm. (Hib)

Fr. Gerald (Gerry) Hipwell, of the Irish Province, died suddenly following a boating accident on May 8th 2004. A native of County Carlow, he was born in 1945 and made his Simple Profession in the Order in 1965 and was ordained to the priesthood six years later. A gifted educator, he worked in several schools. He was deeply committed to working with young people and founded several clubs and other outlets for young people not just in the schools in Moate but within the local area. Among these were the Spartan Club, the Debating Club, photography groups and several others. He also took an active part in the scouting movement in the local area and it was on a scouting weekend that the accident occurred. Fr Gerald’s brother and fellow Carmelite priest – Fr Patrick Michael Hipwell, O.Carm. – also died in an accident in Zimbabwe in 1968.


Alphonsus (Fons) van Rossum, O. Carm. (Neer)

Fr. Fons van Rossum, a member of the Dutch Province, died on June 1, 2004 from a brain stroke suffered 10 days earlier. He was born on March 1, 1932 in Amsterdam. He made his simple profession on September 21, 1953 in the Karmel of Oss and was ordained priest on July 12, 1959 in Merkelbeek.

He taught religion and ministered as a parish priest for many years. He was director of ecumenical work and inspiration of a well known youth choir ‘Berith’. At the time of his death he was the parish priest of the Carmelite parish in Aalsmeer. The funeral was on Saturday, June 5 in Aalsmeer. Fr. Fons was 72 years old.


Valentino Fiasco, O. Carm. (Ita)

Br. Valentino Fiasco of the community of S. Marinella (Italy) died. Born on February 11, 1915 in Castel S. Pietro Romano, he made his first profession on July 29, 1935.


Prior Provincial of Poland
Leszek Pawlak, O. Carm.

The provincial of the Polish Province, Leszek Pawlak, died on June 3, 2004, from injuries suffered in a car accident on May 15, 2004 near the town of Zielonej Góry, Poland. He was 44 years old.

Fr. Leszek was born near Goscikowie near Kolobrzegu on February 12, 1959. He graduated from Nicolas Copernicus High School on June 28, 1985 and finished college. In 1887 he entered the Carmelite Order.

He studied philosophy at the Franciscan Seminary in Cracow where all the Carmelites attend. He completed his theological studies at Mill Town in Dublin, Ireland receiving a Licentiate in Sacred Theology.

He made his solemn profession in Cracow on September 3, 1993. He received ordination to the priesthood from Bishop Jana Szkedonia on June 11, 1994.

From November 1, 1996, Fr. Leszek served as the prior of the community in Bourges, of the French Delegation.

At the Provincial Chapter in 2000, Fr. Leszek was elected provincial of the Polish Province. At the next Provincial Chapter, in May 2003, he was re-elected.

On May 15, following a visit to his parents home, his car slid on the wet pavement and struck an on-coming car on a road near Zielonej Górze. One passenger in the other car suffered minor injuries while the other passenger walked away with no injuries. Fr. Leszek was conscious and speaking following the accident. However, he died 19 days later at a hospital near Zielonej Górze.

Fr. Leszek is survived by both his parents, a brother, and two sisters.

In the late afternoon of June 8, the Carmelite community of Cracow received the body at the monastery. In the presence of the Pawlak family and people from the area, the community sang Vespers. Following a short visitation, the body was moved to the Carmelite church where a funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Joseph Chalmers, the Prior General. Fr. Andrzej Zonko, the acting Provincial and prior of Cracow, and Fr. William J. Harry, the General Councilor for Northern Europe concelebrated. They were joined by numerous members of the Carmelite Province and faithful from various areas of Poland.

The funeral Mass took place on June 9, one day short of the 10th anniversary of Fr. Leszek’s ordination to the priesthood. Bishop Marcjan Trovimiak, the current Bishop of the Ukraine, was the main celebrant. Bishop Jan Szkedonia, who ordained Fr. Lezsek, represented the Archdiocese of Cracow. Fr. Andrzej Zomko and Joseph Chalmers were concelebrants. They were joined by members of the Polish Province, representatives of the Irish Province and the General Delegation of Bohemia-Moravia, and clergy from around Poland.

Burial was at the Carmelite crypt in the Cracow cemetery. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski led the service.


Johannes Günster, O. Carm. (GerI)

Fr. Johannes Günster, a member of the Lower German Province, died on Saturday, June 5, 2004.

Johannes was born in Kamp-Lintfort on October 8, 1934. He made his novitiate in Mainz and professed vows on September 27, 1969. He was ordained priest on June 30, 1973.


Anselm Corbett, O. Carm. (Hib)

Irish Carmelite Fr Anselm Corbett on Friday night, June 11, 2004. Fr Anselm was born in 1915 in Clonmel, Co Tipperary and joined the Order of Carmelites in 1932. He made his First Profession a year later and was ordained to the Priesthood in 1940.

In 1946 he travelled to modern day Zimbabwe with fellow Carmelites, Luke Flynn and Donal Lamont (later Bishop of Umtali), and established the Order in that country. He returned to Ireland in the mid-1950s and served in various offices in Whitefriar Street Church, White Abbey in Kildare town, and Terenure College where he passed away peacefully.


Agostino Caloro, O. Carm.  (Neap)

On June 15, 2004, Fr. Agostino Caloro, member of the Carmelite community in Mesagne, died of a heart attack. Born in 1921 at Caprarica di Lecce, he entered the Carmelite seminary as a young boy. He made his first profession in 1939 and was ordained priest in 1946 following completion of his theological studies in Rome.

Among many ministries, he was most often a prior and pastor. He was dedicated to pastoral work with the pilgrims and in the last few years was the director of the summer house of hospitality of the Province. Bishop Lucio Renna, O. Carm., presided at the funeral.


Redemptus Mulder, O. Carm. (Neer)

Long time member of the community in Boxmeer, Holland, Fr. Redemptus Mulder died on June 22, 2004. He was born on April 2, 1912 and made his first profession on September 8, 1932. He received ordination to the priesthood on July 10, 1938.


Elisabeth Lansche, O. Carm. (ALL)

Mother Elisabeth Lansche, a member of the Carmelite Community of Allentown (USA) died on June 23, 2004 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown. She had been hospitalized for almost a week.

Mother Elisabeth was born on August 1, 1915 in Allentown. She made her first profession on August 23, 1934.


Huub van Teijlingen, O. Carm. (Neer)

Fr. Huub van Teijlingen, a member of the Dutch Province, died on June 26, 2004. He was born on April 7, 1917 in Tilburg and given the name Hubertus Josephus. He made his first profession on April 7, 1920 and was ordained a priest on November 24, 1940.
