Luke Flynn, O. Carm. (Hib)

Fr. Luke Flynn of the Irish Province died on Sunday, May 19, 2002. He was 83 years old. He made his simple profession with the Carmelites in October 1936 and was ordained priest in December 1943.

Fr. Luke was one of the three Carmelites who established the Order in what is now Zimbabwe.
 


Eligius Schothuis, O. Carm. (Neer)

Fr. Eligius Schothuis, O. Carm., died on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at the Carmelite monastery in Zenderen, Holland. He was born on March 30, 1920, made his first profession on September 16, 1940 and was ordained priest in 1946. He was 82 years old.


Brocarda Sri Maharsi Poespowardojo, O. Carm.

Sr. Brocardo Sri Maharsi Poespowardojo, O. Carm., died on May 28, 2002. She was 71. Her brother, Siswanto, also a Carmelite, died on April 13, 2002.


Antónia Mª Garcia y Estragués, O. Carm. (TAR)

Sr. Antónia Mª Garcia i Estragués, O. Carm., died on June 5, 2002, at the Monastery of Amor Divino de Tárrega (Spain) at the age of 94. She professed simple vows in 1987.

She was known for her fervor and enthusiasm for the liturgy, always signing her cards "Alabanza de Dios." Her great care for the various community moments and her enjoyment at being together with her sisters in recreation added to the joy of the others.


M. Francesca di Gesù Bambino, O. Carm. (SUT)

Sr. M. Francesca di Gesù Bambino, born Maria Melis in Villasimius (Italy) on December 8, 1914 and entered the "SS.ma Concezione" Carmel in Sutri on October 17, 1946. Received in the habit on April 30, 1947, she professed simple vows on May 25, 1948 and solemn vows on September 23, 1952. She served the community as cook, treasurer, and councilor. Sister died peacefully on June 8 after a brief but grave illness, surrounded by her sisters in prayer.


Franziska Baltus, O. Carm. (ERL)

Sr. Franziska Baltus, O. Carm., of the Carmelite monastery in Erlangen-Büchenbach, Germany, died on June 14, 2002. She was 93 years old.


Robert Primozic, O. Carm. (PCM)

Fr. Robert Primozic, O. Carm., died on Friday, June 14, 2002. He was a resident at the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirmed in Naperville, Illinois (USA). He was born on August 25, 1938, made his first profession on August 18, 1958, and was ordained priest in 1964. He was 63 years old.


Marie Cecile Sicard, O. Carm. (ALL)

Sr. Marie Cecile Sicard, member of the Carmelite community in Allentown, Pennsylvania (USA) died on Sunday, June 16, 2002 in Allentown. She was 75. She professed first vows in 1947.


Roseline Vushe, HLMC

Sr. Roseline died on June 17, 2002 after an illness of some months. She joined the Carmelite Sisters in January, 1985 and made her first profession in 1993. She made her perpetual profession only in January 2002.

By nature Sr. Roseline was friendly, quiet, and gentle. She always was pleasant in difficult situations and endured his illness with great patience.


Francisco Nadal Gracia, O. Carm. (Arag)

Br. Francisco Nadal Gracia, of the Arago-Valentina Province, died at the age of 58 on July 17, 2002. He had been a religious for 37 years.

Francisco, better known as ‘Paco’, was born on November 7, 1943 and professed vows on February 23, 1965. He spend most of his religious life at the Carmelite Minor Seminary in Villarreal in Castellón. He was responsible for welcoming guests and the upkeep of the house. He will be remembered for his joy and community spirit. He was very responsible in his work, even continuing to work although his illness had diminished his physical strength.


Roland Murphy, O. Carm. (PCM)

Fr. Roland Murphy, of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, died on July 20, 2002 at a hospital in Washington, DC. He death was from complications following a fall.

Born in Chicago, Illinois (USA) on July 19, 1917, he entered the Carmelite Order as a young boy. He professed vows in 1935 and was ordained on May 23, 1942. A student of the Bible with an international reputation as well as an excellent speaker, he published numerous articles on the Old Testament and on the methodology of biblical research and interpretation, specializing in wisdom literature. He was best known for his collaboration on the Jerome Biblical Commentary, originally published in 1968 with a second edition in 1990, which was a revision of two thirds of the original work.

Among his many responsibilities, Roland was past president of the Catholic Bible Association and professor of biblical studies at Catholic University of America, the Duke University Divinity School, and resident scholar of the Washington Theological Union.

His brother, David Murphy, is also a Carmelite priest in the PCM Province.


Angelino Wissink, O. Carm. (Rio)

Fr. Angelino Wissink, member of the Rio de Janerio Province, died July 30, 2002, from cancer at the age of 88.

A student of the Bible in Rome, Fr. Angelino earned a licentiate in Scripture. He was prefect of students in the Carmelite seminary in São Paulo, Brazil, several times. Twice he was Prior Provincial. He was respected as a good Carmelite, a man of prayer, realistic and sincere. Although he suffered the past year with cancer, he lived in tranquility and was at peace.


Cosmas Peters, O. Carm. (Neer)

Fr. Cosmas (Franciscus Antonius) died on August 2, 2002 Nijmegen (The Netherlands) at the age of 78 years old. He was born July 22 1924 in Hulst. After his profession on September 22, 1944 in Boxmeer and his ordination on July 9, 1950, in Merkelbeek, he studied in Rome at the Gregorian University and became a lecturer in dogmatic theology at the Carmelite college in Rome, the Merkelbeek in 1965, and in Dordrecht in 1966. In 1967 he moved to Sumatra (Indonesia) where he taught until he returned to The Netherlands in 1980. After two years as an assistant pastor, he was the parish pastor for 15 years.

Fr Peters was an excellent student, enjoyed teaching, and became a good linguist. He wrote many popular scientific articles about great figures in the Carmelite tradition. While known for being serious, he had a ready laugh. "I am a conservative," he sometimes said. He found some of the new developments after the Vatican Council II difficult. In his retirement years he suffered a stroke.


Murray Phelan, O. Carm. (PCM)

Fr. Murray Phelan, of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province, died August, 5, 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Murray, then Commissary Provincial for the Western United States, was elected Prior Provincial of the PCM Province completing John Malley’s second term after John had been elected Prior General. Murray had ministered as a high school teacher and was later rector of the minor seminary in Niagara Falls, ONT, principal at DeSales High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and was then made pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Phoenix, AZ.

During his almost 7 years as Prior Provincial, the theology house in Washington and the Carmel Retreat in Mahwah, NJ were renovated. Also during his term, the Carmelite high schools began the courageous first steps towards a stronger future with the merging of two all male schools with their sister schools and the establishment of school boards, allowing for lay leadership.
