DEATHS

 

Henk te Wierik, O. Carm.

Carmelite Henk te Wierik of the Dutch Province died in the hospital in Almelo on October 28. He was born on October 13, 1942 and entered Carmel at Boxmeer in September 1960. He was 60 years old.

He died after some weeks of illness from complications following medical operations. Following his profession, he became the tailor and then the cook in the monastries of Boxmeer, Merkelbeek, and Zenderen. In 1968, he departed for the Philippine Commissariate but his health brought him back to the convent of Almelo. After his recovery, he worked from 1971 until 2001 as a textile-worker and volunteer at the prison of Almelo. He was a very socially conscious and faithful man and Carmelite.


Domenico Giampolo, O. Carm.

Fr. Domenico Giampaolo, O. Carm., of the Italian Province, died on November 11, 2002 following a long illness. Born on April 9, 1927, he made his simple profession on October 21, 1941. He was the prior of the Carmelite residence in Sassari.


Harry (Hendrikus, Stephanus, Maria) Westerhof, O. Carm

Fr. Hendrikus (Harrie, Stephanus, Maria) Westerhof, O. Carm, of the Dutch Province, died on November 17, 2002 of cancer. Born on August 15, 1931 in Slagharen-De Belthe, The Netherlands, he made his simple profession on September 15, 1952. He was ordained priest on July 6, 1958. He was 71 years old.

He was a teacher of  philosophy in Dordrecht (Amstelwijck) from 1965-67. He then moved to Nijmegen for study, was prior of the community ‘De Fest,’ and delegate for the Carmelite nuns until 1970. He moved to Almelo and from 1972 he was pastor in Vriezenveen until 1981, in Hardenberg, Zwolle, and Slagharen-De Belte from 1982 until he retired in 1999. In his various ministries, he was very involved, sometimes in unconvential ways, with people in distress, refugees and those living marginally. He worked with great passion for the Gospel and was a pastor in heart and soul


Alberto Box Morcillo, O. Carm.

Fr. Alberto Box Morcillo, O. Carm, of the Arago-Valentina Province and a member of the Ayala community in Madrid, died on November 7, 2002. He had been ill for some time. Born on August 5, 1927 in Cieza (Murcia), he made his simple profession on August 15, 1945. He was ordained priest on October 28, 1951. He was 75 years old.


Konrad Pasterkamp, O. Carm.

Brother Konrad Pasterkamp, O. Carm, of the Lower German Province, died on November 21, 2002. He was born on May 26, 1924 in Raalte (The Netherlands). He joined the Lower German Province, making his simple profession on May 14, 1959. He professed his solemn vows on May 14, 1962. He was 78 years old.


Bernardus Antonius Nijhuis, O. Carm. 

Fr. Bernardus Antonius Nijhuis, O. Carm, of the Dutch Province, died on November 24, 2002 at age 80. He was born on June 28, 1922 in Albergen (The Netherlands) and made his simple profession on September 22, 1944. He was ordained priest on July 9, 1949.


E.B. (Joe) Phillips, O. Carm.

E.B. (Joe) Phillips, O. Carm, of the Australian Province, died on November 28, 2002 at age 99. He was the oldest member of the Order. He was born on July 21, 1903 in Hamilton, Victoria (Australia) and made his simple profession on May 3, 1930. He was ordained priest on June 28, 1936.


Anthony Moffat, O. Carm.

Br. Anthony Moffat, O. Carm., of the Australian Province, died on December 3, 2002 in Sydney. Born on October 16, 1934 in Melbourne, Victoria, he made his simple profession on June 28, 1963. He was 68 years old.


Anthony Parnis, O. Carm.

Fr. Anthony Parnis, O. Carm., of the Fleur De Lys community, passed away suddenly on Sunday December 15. He was 54 years of age. 

Fr. Anthony entered Carmel in 1965 and made his solemn profession on the October 18, 1969. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1974.


George O'Keefe, O. Carm.

Fr. George O'Keefe, O. Carm, of the PCM Province, died suddenly on December 23, 2002 at age 80. He was born on May 15, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois (USA) and made his simple profession on August 15, 1942. He was ordained priest on June 5, 1948.

Following his ordination, George was in the Brothers’ Formation program in Akron, Ohio for three years. He then spent the majority of his ministry in parish work, including Santiago, Chile as well as in Lima and Sicuani, Peru. He then returned to the United States and parish ministry. In 1984, he began working at the Cook County Jail in Chicago, Illinois.

Following partial retirement, he undertook the challenge of interviewing each member of the PCM Province as part of an Oral History Project.


Dina McGhee

Dina McGhee, the president of "Leaven," a Carmelite secular institute, died suddenly in Scotland on December 28, 2002.

            The Leaven was founded in Aylesford, England.in 1949 and affiliated to the Order at the same time. Members are located throughout the United Kingdom.

 


Sean O'Leary, O. Carm.

Fr. Sean O'Leary, O. Carm., of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province, died on Monday, December 30, 2002 following an illness. He made his first profession on August 22, 1949 and was ordained a priest on May 28, 1955. 

            Beginning his teaching ministry in 1956, Sean then moved into retreat work, counseling and then he became prior of Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC. In 1970, he became an assistant pastor and then, in 1979, he became pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Houston, TX. He was a member of the original team which reestablished the Order in France. He returned in 1994 to work in parishes and then in initial formation. He retired to Florida.

He was 72 years of age.
