Juan Esteban Tejera, O. Carm., and Juan Pablo Chaparro Garzón, O. Carm., of the Provincial Commissary of Baetica in Venezuela made their Solemn Profession on August 15, 2001 in the Carmelite Parish of Ntra. Sra. del Carmen in Petare (Caracas). The Commissary Provincial, Manuel Sánchez León, O. Carm., presided at the liturgy and received the vows.


Onesimus Muthini Muthoka, O. Carm

Onesimus Muthini Muthoka, O. Carm., Provincia of Cataluña, made his Solemn Profession on October 6, 2002 in the Carmelite Parish of La Mare de Déu del Carme in Terrassa (Barcelona). Presiding at the liturgy and receiving the vows was the Prior Provincial, Manuel Bonilla Gutiérrez, O. Carm.


Jorge Rafael Betancourt Ramírez, O. Carm.

The Solemn Profession of Jorge Rafael Betancourt Ramírez, O. Carm., took place on the Solemnity of Our Lady of Divine Providence, November 19, 2001. Tomás Ciscar Nadal, O. Carm., the Commissary Provincial of the Antilles, received Jorge's vows in the Carmelite Church of Santa Teresita in Santurce.


Maria Rowena of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, O. Carm.

Veniegas Bumacod, O. Carm., of the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Burgos, Pangasinan (Phillipines) made her solemn profession on December 8, 2001. Bishop Jesus Cabrera, the Bishop of Alaminos, led the celebration.
 

Paul Henson, O. Carm.

The solemn profession of Paul Henson, O. Carm., of the PCM Province took place at Whitefriars Hall, Washington, DC, on December 8, 2001. Emmett Gavin, O. Carm., the Director of Formation at Whitefriars Hall accepted the vows and preached during the Eucharistic celebration.
 

M. Giuliana della Virgo Purissima, O. Carm. 
Sr. M. Giuliana made her solemn profession on January 6, 2002, the Solemnity of the Epiphany, at the church of St. John in Carpineto Romano in Italy.
 

Adrian Ghiurca, O. Carm.
Augustin Farcas, O. Carm.

The Italian Province held a celebration for the Solemn Profession of two of its members on January 20, 2002 at San Martino ai Monti in Rome. Adrian Ghiurca, O. Carm., and Augustin Farcas, O. Carm., both from Rumania, made their profession in the hands of the recently elected Prior Provincial, Claudio Bellotti, O. Carm.

DEATHS

Maria Raffaella di San Giuseppe, O. Carm.

Born at Monte Sant' Angelo (Foggia, Italy) on November 12, 1920, she entered the Carmel of Carmerino on February 14, 1949. She spent her life in Carmel developing the gifts that the Lord had given to her. She prayed for a peaceful death and this was granted to her.
 

M. Arcángela de Jesús, O. Carm.

On the Feast of All Carmelite Saints, Sr. Arcángela died at the Monastery of Madre de Dios de Fontiveros. She was 92 years old. The Provincial, Juan de Dios, O. Carm., presided at the funeral liturgy. Sr. Angela was born into a very large family. There were 21 children. Among so many came two vocations to Carmel, Sr. Angela and Sr. María del Carmen, who is the current Prioress of the monastery in Piedrahita (Spain).
 

Benedict Hogan, O. Carm.

Fr. Benedict Hogan, O. Carm., of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (PCM), died after a long illness on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Chicago, IL (USA). His funeral liturgy was held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Darien, IL. He was a long time teacher and pastoral associate in various places in the Province and was noted for his homilies. He was 68.
 

Jacinto Martínez Santamaría, O. Carm.

Fr. Jacinto Martínez Santamaría, O. Carm., of the Argo-Valentina Province died on December 24, 2001, at 6 PM in Onda (Castellón). He was a priest for 63 years. His burial took place on December 25, Christmas Day in the Carmelite parish in Onda.
 

Maria do Divino Coração Figueiredo, O. Carm.

Sr. Maria do Divino Coração Figueiredo, O. Carm., from the Carmelite monastery of Carmelo do Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Beja, Portugal, died December 31, 2001.
 

Theodorus (Martinus Alphonsus) Hendriks, O. Carm.

Fr. Theodorus Hendriks, O. Carm., of the Dutch Province, died at age 79 in Boxmeer, Holland, on January 1, 2002. After a number of years working as a pastoral assistant and procurator in Oss, Nijmegan, and Boxmeer, he lived in the monastery at Boxmeer since 1956. He taught religion in the technical school in Boxmeer and was the assistant librarian. He was also confessor to various communities of religious sisters as well as the Carmelite nuns in Boxmeer. His brother Cor, also a Carmelite, preceded him in death.
 

James McCouaig, O. Carm.

Fr. James McCouaig, O. Carm., of the Irish Province, died on January 14, 2002. He lived and worked for more than 50 years at Terenure College.
 

Bishop Telesforo Cioli, O. Carm.

On January 15, 2002, the Lord called home Bishop Telesforo Giovanni Cioli, bishop-emeritus of the Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro. Bishop Cioli was born on April 21, 1907. Among his other ministries, he was Provincial of the then Roman Province of the Carmelites. He was also a member of the Second Vatican Council.
    A man of simple and modest tastes but with great gifts, he also become beloved by his people for his wide knowledge and for his kindness towards everyone who came to him. In 1985, he published a book titled Il commino del cristiano (The Journey of the Christian) in which he tied together in a very ordinary way the great themes of Christianity. It was a reflection on the Ministry of the Word which was his focus for so many years in the Diocese of Arezzo and then in the Dioceses of Sansepolcro and Cortona.
 

M. Virginia Murtinu, SMCTBG

Sr. M. Virginia (Giovanna) Murtinu died peacefully on February 1, 2002 at Aurelia Hospital in Rome. Her life was dedicated to "little ones", above all in the Brazilian missions of which she was one of the founders in 1947.
 

Alfonzo Maria López Sendín, O. Carm.

On February 1, 2002, Alfonso María López Sendin, O. Carm., of the Castille Province, died in the Hermanas Reparadoras de los Dolores Residence in El Escorial (Madrid, Spain). He was 95 years old and was the founding Provincial of the Province of Castille in 1948. He was also professor of theology in the Centro Teológico Carmelita de Salamanca and a great writer and poet. He was an expert in the Latin language. During these recent years, he collaborated with the Fundación Virgen de los Dolores de El Escorial (Madrid), a movement that grew out of the supposed apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Prado Nuevo del Escorial to the visionary Amparo Cuevas.
    The funeral Mass was celebrated February 2, 2002, in the Monastery of MM. Carmelitas de la c/ Príncipe de Vergara in Madrid. The burial took place on February 3, 2002 in the cemetery of Carabanchel, Madrid, in the same place where his Carmelite companions were shot in August 1936 and whose process for beatification is currently in process in Rome.
 

Annita Morgano, INS del Carmelo

Sr. Annita, O. Carm., of the Istituto di Nostra Signora del Carmelo, died February 2, 2002, in Washington, DC (USA). She had lived and worked for many years at Whitefriars Hall and then at the Sisters Day Care Center, both located in Washington, DC.
 

Angelo Mirri, O. Carm.

Br. Angelo Mirri, O. Carm., of the San Felice del Benaco (Italy) Carmelite Community died on February 2, 2002. He was born in 1915 and made his simple profession in 1932. He was very active in the restauration of the monastery in San Felice.
 

John Berridge, O. Carm.

Br. John Berridge, O. Carm., of the Aylesford, England Carmelite Community died on February 8, 2002, his 81st birthday. He joined the Aylesford Community shortly after it was restored to the Order in 1947.
    He was a familiar and beloved figure to the pilgrims who frequented the shrine.
 

Bishop Eliseu Maria Gomes de Oliveira, O. Carm.

The Carmelite Bishop-Emeritus of Itabuna (Brazil) died on Monday, February 11, 2002. He was 81 years old. The funeral services were celebrated on Tuesday afternoon, February 12, in the Cathedreal of Itabuna.
 

Sr. Marisa Sciberras, CMSTGB

Sr. Marisa Sciberras, of the Carmelite Missionary Sisters of the St. Therese of the Child Jesus, died on February 15, 2002 in the hospital on Gozo (Malta) after several days of hospitalization. She was 60 years old. She made her first profession on October 3, 1966 and worked as a teacher in various locations around the Congregation.
